After growing up in the RGV (ay puro 956!), moving to Central Texas at 18 was a pivotal moment in my life, bringing cultural shock, many identity crises, high anxiety, and family stress. I quickly felt very out of place in Austin and higher education institutions. My cultural roots were so thirsty to be around Mexican food, music and community.
With time, my own therapy, and lots of internal work, I continue to reconnect with my ancestors and ancestral lands, to nature, Madre Tierra, Tonantzin Tlalli, and unlearn many beliefs rooted in white supremacy, sexism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, capitalism, and more to decolonize myself. I've been able connect my mind, body and spirit through the Mexica Danza Community here in Austin and my studies in Tonalpohualli (the count of days) with Maestro Akaxe Gomez; I'm forever grateful for them and these sacred lands and water in Central Texas. ✨
I graduated from Texas State University with my B.S., followed by my MSSW at The University of Texas at Austin. As a new generation, I also want to evolve the landscape of mental health and be more accessible to folks that are often overlooked by the systems we live in. I honor where people are at, see their strengths and power, and I listen. I'm not "fixing you." I'm just with you and support you as you heal yourself.
I began serving folks living with HIV in 2016, providing psychoeducation and social support for sexual and mental wellbeing. I have served QTBIPOC youth and young adults as they explore who they are and who they want to be. I have supported folks in navigating social services, learning organizational skills to keep track of all the moving parts, applying for jobs and discovering paths they want to take as they enter into adulthood.
My identities have guided me to this path, and it's been liberating to live authentically while navigating this modern world. All parts of you matter, and in this space I hope you can discover your own tools, magic, and medicina as you navigate your life day by day. 🌀✨
I am currently a student of Maestro Akaxe Gomez learning the Tonalpohualli: the count of a ritual 260-day calendar that was created by ancient Toltecs (prior to Mexica and Aztecs!).
Why 260 days? Because at that time, that was the gestation period of a human being. Ancient Toltecs observed the human relationship with the environment and the cosmos.
I quickly realized that the natural and psychological qualities of Tolteca teachings are concepts I learned in graduate school, such as CBT or ACT. My intention is to weave pre-colonial teachings into this therapeutic space by implementing observations from nature to identify your thoughts and emotions and how they affect your actions to ultimately transform your patterns of behavior.
As someone who's connecting to the land, ask yourself: "How can I embody the qualities of nature? Which elements or animals do I want to guide me today?" Discover how they can offer guidance on your self-healing journey.
My top 3 values: Respect, Curiosity & Community
Mutual respect towards one another is a foundation to building a connection. I will be respectful and curious as we get to work together. We can open doors into your past or fears when you are ready to do so. You have the right to go at your desired speed in this space.
I am also a social justice advocate and community worker. As a Brown Social Worker living in the Capital of Texas, I show up and do what I can to advocate for BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ youth, harm-reduction practices, sexual wellbeing, healthcare, calling to end the genocides around the world, freeing oppressed people, and many other people and causes.
Being resourceful is also a value I hold; as I learned it is a necessity. I'll gladly share resources with a person even if we don't seem like a good fit to work together.
I work with all walks of life. Throughout my time in non-profits, I really grew a passion for supporting teens and young adults, femme folks, and BIPOC & LGBTQIA2S+ folks. As an Indigiqueer person, I struggle to find culturally aware providers for myself and feel truly seen. My hope is to create a safe space for someone to explore and live authentically with confidence and compassion.
Many of my clients have experienced trauma due to the different identities they hold. Many of my clients want to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma in their families. My clients have told me I ground them; they feel seen and heard as I listen with empathy & without judgment.
"Water is sacred... Water is one symbol of great knowledge of transparency, strength and tranquility." -Maestro Akaxe Gomez
